TAIPEI--Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport will close one of its two runways Wednesday for a major overhaul that is expected to take nearly a year, the airport said yesterday.
The 3,350-meter southern runway will be closed until Jan. 15, 2015, the longest closure since the runways went into service more than 30 years ago, the airport said.
The project will involve digging up and repaving the runway to lay underground cables that will upgrade the airport's navigation aid system, according to airport management.
After work on the southern runway is completed, the 3,360-meter northern runway will be closed for a similar purpose, the airport added. That work is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. While the southern runway is closed, a backup runway will be open for takeoffs but not for landings.
The airport predicted that due to the closure, landings and takeoffs may be delayed five to 15 minutes during peak hours, and even longer during unfavorable weather conditions such as fogs and thunderstorms.
The closure could also affect plans by airlines to launch extra flights during summer's peak season, the airport said.
