The NDC is now made up of 24 members, mostly key Cabinet ministers including those in charge of economics, finance, defense and culture, according to NDC officials who spoke Tuesday at the council's first press conference following the Lunar New Year holiday.
Established Jan. 24, the NDC was formed by integrating the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) and the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (RDEC) as well as part of the Public Construction Commission, part of a larger effort to reorganize the Executive Yuan.
Defining the NDC as an operative headquarters for the country's national development strategies, NDC Minister Kuan Chung-ming said at Tuesday's press conference that the council will be broader in scope than either the CEPD or RDEC was.
Kuan listed the council's goals as development in terms of economics, society, population structure, land planning and government administration.
