Ex-deputy minister begins prison term for corruption

TAIPEI--Former Deputy Interior Minister Yen Wan-chin (顏萬進) on Tuesday reported to Yilan Prison, where he will serve a12 year-and-six-month sentence for abuse of power and accepting a bribe of NT$1.2 million (US$39,600) to award a construction contract.

The 49-year-old was accompanied to the prison by about a dozen friends who showed up to "bid farewell."

Yen was a deputy minister of the interior from January to July 2006 under the Democratic Progressive Party administration of then-President Chen Shui-bian and then-Premier Su Tseng-chang.

He resigned after being detained on charges of corruption related to the planned construction of a gondola lift system in Taipei's Beitou District.

The Taiwan High Court found him guilty in 2008 of accepting the NT$1.2 million bribe from a developer.
