TAIPEI -- The traffic volume on Taiwan's freeways rose to an average of 2.7 million vehicles per day during the Lunar New Year holiday as generally good weather conditions prevailed and the toll-free hours were extended, the transportation ministry said Wednesday.
The figures recorded during the Jan. 30-Feb. 4 period marked an 11-percent increase compared with the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday last year, the ministry said.
The freeway traffic peaked on Feb. 2 to 3.12 million vehicles, 84 percent higher than the daily average of 1.7 million so far this year, according to transportation officials.
Lu Wen-yu of the National Freeway Bureau said more short trips were also taken this year as the weather was warm and sunny and the holiday period was shorter than usual.
