TRA ridership drops y-o-y on last day of CNY holiday

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said yesterday that the number of passengers on the final day of the six-day Lunar New Year holiday is expected to be 9.5 percent down from a year earlier.
The TRA said it expected to transport about 761,000 passengers Tuesday, compared with 801,790 passengers the previous day, when the ridership was up 0.3 percent year-on-year. Revenue for Monday totaled NT$80.16 million (US$2.64 million), up 3.1 percent from a year ago,the TRA said.
It said the day's operations went smoothly, with a 47 percent increase in capacity taking passengers back from their family visits.
The administration said it was providing a total of 298 trains, up 88 from the normal level, with an additional 196 carriages, which was expected to meet the heavy demand over the holiday period.
