Mayor of Taichung to run for re-election at year-end

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Incumbent Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) is to announce his re-election bid for the central Taiwan special municipality, Council Speaker Lin Shih-chang confirmed Tuesday.

If elected, Hu, of the ruling Kuomintang, will have been the longest-serving mayor of Taichung for 17 years over four terms, including a period before Taichung City was merged with neighboring Taichung County into a municipality in late 2010.

In response to concerns on his long term in office, Hu said that “the term is stipulated under the law.”

But to win, Hu will have to face a tall order of defeating his former challenger, Lin Chia-lung, an opposition Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker who has been working hard at the grassroots level for 10 years.
