NFB estimates 3 million vehicles to hit freeways today

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The National Freeway Bureau (NFB) yesterday said that about 3 million vehicles are expected to enter freeways today, and drivers can avoid traffic jams by hitting the roads during high occupancy periods.

According to the NFB, the volume of traffic entering northbound freeways today, which is the fourth day of the Chinese New Year holidays, will be the highest compared to other days during the holidays.

The NFB estimated that the amount of vehicles using freeways through the entire day will reach 2.9 to 3 million.

If drivers wish to avoid being stuck in traffic jams, the NFB said they can enter freeways before 3 p.m. since more cars will enter freeways after the end of the high occupancy period.

The NFB said that drivers can also choose to hit the freeways after 12 p.m. to avoid encountering traffic congestion.

According to the NFB, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today there will be high-occupancy control at the northbound section between Kaohsiung and Neili of National Highway No. 1 and at the northbound section between Jiouru to Daxi of National Highway No. 3.

The northbound section between Suao and Toucheng on National Highway No. 5 will also be under high-occupancy control from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the NFB.

The NFB said that the northbound ramp to enter the freeway at Puyan will be closed for the entire day.

According to the NFB, drivers might experience traffic jams at the following sections of freeways: the southbound section in Changhua on National Highway No. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the northbound section between Siluo and Changhua and the section between Toufen and Chupei on National Highway No. 1 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The NFB also said that the southbound section between Kuaiguan and Wuri and the northbound section between Muzha and Nanshen Rd. of National Highway No. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with the northbound section between Minjin and Wufen from 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., will be the areas in which drivers might experience traffic jams.

According to the NFB, the total amount of traffic that used freeways on Feb. 1 reached 3.05 million, which was the highest freeway usage in the nation's history.
