Ma arrives in Los Angeles for brief layover during return trip

LOS ANGELES--President Ma Ying-jeou arrived in Los Angeles Monday on a transit stop while en route back to Taiwan from Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

He was greeted at the airport by Taiwan's representative to Washington King Pu-tsung and American Institute in Taiwan Chairman Raymond Burghardt.

Ma Attends Inauguration of Honduran President

Republic of China (Taiwan) President Ma Ying-jeou attended the inauguration of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez on Monday on the last leg of an eight-day diplomatic tour.

Ma received a warm round of applause from the 30,000 people in attendance when he was introduced by the master of ceremonies as he entered the stadium where the inauguration was held.

He was seated in the front row of the section for dignitaries between Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga and Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina and enjoyed a friendly chat with them after taking his seat.

The ceremony itself was full of pomp, with performances, a gun salute and military aircraft flying over the stadium to welcome in the new Honduran leader.

When Hernandez returned to his seat after being sworn in and delivering his inaugural speech, Ma shook hands with him and offered his congratulations.

Taiwanese reporters at the event appreciated another detail: the organizer of the inauguration presented the 800-odd journalists covering the ceremony a USB made by Kingston Technology Co., a Taiwan-invested company based in California.

Honduras is the last leg of Ma's eight-day three-nation trip, which has already brought him to Sao Tome and Principe and Burkina Faso in Africa.

He was scheduled to leave Tegucigalpa late Monday for a stopover in Los Angeles before returning to Taipei on Jan. 30.
