Poor air quality, cold front sweeping Taiwan

TAIPEI -- Poor air quality was reported yesterday in Central and Southern Taiwan as a high level of particulates was carried by wind coming into Taiwan, according to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA).

The EPA warned of dust and air pollutants and said the air quality across the island was ranging from moderate to unhealthy as high levels of PM10 and PM2.5, which can enter the respiratory system and lead to chronic disease, were detected.

The concentration of particulates in Tainan in the South and in the counties of Yunlin and Chiayi were up to 115-135 on the EPA's Pollutant Standards Index (PSI), which is defined as unhealthy for sensitive groups, the EPA said.

In the rest of the country, the air quality was moderate, although the particulate levels were still high, the EPA said.

Meanwhile, the Central Weather Bureau forecast a temperature drop of 6-7 degrees Celsius as the result of the arrival of a cold front.

Showers and daytime temperatures of 18-19 degrees Celsius were expected in the North and in the Eastern county of Yilan.

The mercury in Hualien and Taitung counties in the southeast, as well as in Central and Southern Taiwan, will hover around 22-25 degrees, the bureau said.

However, the temperature will vary over 11 degrees from day to night in western and northeastern Taiwan and 15 degrees in Hualien and Taitung, according to the bureau.
