Global PC shipments will slow in 2014: research firm

TAIPEI--The long beleaguered personal computer is expected to see shipments continue contracting over 2014 as attention turns to new market favorites such as wearable devices and ultra high-definition televisions, a local research firm has predicted.

Global PC shipments, which dipped 10 percent last year, could drop at a slower rate of 3.2 percent this year to 2.83 billion, TrendForce said in a research note.

“PCs may not be able to attract as much hype and attention as innovative products, but they are still perceived to be necessary to the computing industry,” said Avril Wu, an assistant manager at TrendForce.

The decline can be limited further if hybrid models — computers that combine elements of laptops and tablets — can drive the market, she said.

Low-cost computing devices are expected to grow in importance and eventually become a major pillar for the industry alongside the growth of cloud-based applications, she added.
