Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration marks 11 years

TAIPEI--The Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration on Saturday celebrated its 11th founding anniversary and a new breakthrough — the number of people employed at the park has surpassed 70,000 for the first time.

The administration held a celebration at the Tainan Science Park, one of two sections of the science park that also includes the Kaohsiung Science Park. Many local residents joined in the celebration.

Established by Taiwan's government, the science park administration was inaugurated in January 2003 and is under the supervision of the Cabinet-level National Science Council.

Over the years, the administration has spared no efforts to bring local culture, life style and ecology into the park, so that it would be turned from "a science park" into "a community," where people can live well and work comfortably, said Chen Chun-wei, head of the administration.

In its relatively short 11-year history, the science park has managed to generate annual revenue that has grown to NT$700 billion (US$23 billion) and create over 70,000 jobs.

Recognizing the science park's contribution to local development, Tainan Mayor William Lai said the city will continue to support the park's development by assisting the park administration with acquisition of land and water resources, as well as resolving issues including providing convenient transportation services for its staff and education for the employees' children.
