CWB forecasts warmer weather starting today

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan could see higher temperatures from Thursday as the cold surge weakens, the Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday.

Daytime highs could rise by 4-6 degrees Celsius in the north, 3-4 degrees in Central Taiwan, and 1-2 degrees in the south, with maximum temperatures of 20 degrees possible in some areas, forecasters said.

Lows, however, could remain around the same levels seen Wednesday, hovering at 7-9 degrees island-wide due to a radiative cooling effect.

The general warming trend will be accompanied by mostly dry skies through Sunday, when an approaching cold front is expected to bring cooler and wetter weather, the bureau said.

On Thursday, temperatures are expected to be 9-19 degrees in the north, 8-20 degrees in Central Taiwan, and 9-21 degrees in the south.

The recent spell of cold weather has already caused damage to local farming businesses. Up to 10,000 milkfish were reported killed by low temperature along the coast in Chiayi and Yunlin counties, costing around NT$1 million. Local agricultural authorities reminded milkfish growers to take precautions against cold weather and to dispose dead fish as soon as possible. Warmer daytime weather will accelerate the rotting process of the remains and poses a threat to healthy fish.
