Kaohsiung zoo closes exhibit after bear brawl

KAOHSIUNG--Kaohsiung's Shoushan Zoo has temporarily closed off its Formosan black bear exhibit out of safety concerns following a fight late last month between two male bears that left one dead, zoo director Chang Po-yu said Tuesday.

Calling the incident “regretful,” Chang said that the bear display will nonetheless be reopened before the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, lasting from Jan. 30-Feb. 4.

The fight occurred Dec. 20, when Po Pi, a large 10-year-old black bear, broke through a barrier separating him from Hsiao Shan, another male. At some 20 years older than his 150-kilogram attacker, Hsiao Shan could not defend himself and eventually succumbed to his severe bite wounds later in the day.

Formosan black bear Bobi is shown in this photo at the Shoushan Zoo, Kaohsiung. Bobi was recently “grounded” from being on display because he attacked the zoo's older Formosan bear Xiaoshan, ultimately resulting in the latter's death. Formosan black bears are endemic to Taiwan.
