Latest cold front may bring mercury down to 7 degrees Celsius by Tuesday

TAIPEI--A new mass of cold air arriving in Taiwan Monday evening could bring temperatures down to 7 degrees Celsius early Tuesday through Thursday in the open areas of Chiayi and Tainan, the Central Weather Bureau said Sunday.

The mercury dropped to between 8 and 10 degrees C in central and southern Taiwan and a low of 7.4 degrees C in Chiayi County, also in southern Taiwan, early Sunday as a result of the radiative cooling effect, according to the CWB.

The effect, apparent in clear weather, will continue Sunday night and Monday morning, with the temperatures falling to 11 degrees C in open spaces of western Taiwan, said the weather bureau, adding that a new cold current plus radiative cooling could drive the mercury down to 7 degrees C in Chiayi and Tainan early Tuesday.

Cloud and relative humidity affect weather in what is called radiative cooling effect as a clear night tends to create greater drops in temperature while a cloudy night would see a milder fall of temperature.

The CWB forecast a clear to cloudy sky for most of Taiwan Monday with high temperatures ranging from 19 to 23 degrees — the same as Sunday.

By evening, a cold current will approach to create a big drop in temperature, and central and southern Taiwan could see a difference of 10 degrees in day-time and night-time temperatures, said the bureau.

Issuing a cold alert, the bureau said the early morning of Jan. 21 through Jan. 23 will see a low of 8-9 degrees in central and northern Taiwan, 10-11 degrees in southern Taiwan, and 12-13 degrees in eastern Taiwan before the cold mass eases off on Jan. 24.
