Rumors claim runaway officer already deported

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Rumors emerged yesterday claiming that former R.O.C. intelligence officer Emily Yeh (葉玫), who fled military service to the UK, had been deported and was scheduled to arrive in Taipei today.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment, saying that the government will make an announcement at the appropriate time.

A former lieutenant in the MND's Military Intelligence Bureau, Yeh, 33, was put on the government's wanted list after she failed to report for duty following her vacation in July 2012. She was arrested in the UK last December for visa violations and was held under detention.

Yeh is facing a maximum five-year prison term for violating Article 39 of the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces, which stipulates a sentence of “imprisonment for not more than five years” for “a person who tries to get rid of military service over a long period of time.”
