Taiwan must join TPP, RCEP as soon as possible: Ma

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou stressed yesterday that Taiwan needs to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) as soon as possible.

Ma made the comments while speaking to representatives of companies stationed within the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park, one of the island's Free Economic Pilot Zones (FEPZs).

Ma praised Reber Genetics and Taiwan Fu Shrimp Enterprise, saying that he was particularly impressed with their performances.

The president said that he visited Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park to see how agricultural biotechnology has fared within Taiwan's FEPZs.

Ma explained that Taiwan's diplomatic isolation has hindered the island's attempt to engage in trade negotiations, but that by signing the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with mainland China, the government has been able to ink economic cooperation agreements and investment pacts with New Zealand, Singapore and Japan, as well as resume talks with the U.S. under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.

The president emphasized that Taiwan needs to loosen restrictions and open its market in order to take a greater part in regional economic integration and that the island needs to join the TPP and the RCEP as soon as possible.

Reber Genetics suggested that the government should aim to simplify procedures for registering bacterin when negotiating with mainland China, while Timing Pharmaceutical said that Chinese medicine companies in Taiwan have a substantial edge over their mainland Chinese counterparts due to the amount of pharmaceutical patents they have, adding that Taiwan can consider using this advantage as leverage during cross-strait negotiations.

Another corporation suggested that the government help develop preventive health care measures like countries in the West.
