Fresh NT notes open for exchange from January 23

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Central Bank on Thursday announced that the public can approach 455 branches of banks and Chunghwa Post Co. islandwide to trade their money for newly-issued Taiwan dollar (NT) notes from Jan. 23 to Jan. 29.

As a New Year's custom, Taiwanese people usually exchange old NT notes for new ones, so that they can slip the crisp notes into red envelops as gifts.

Central Issuing Department Director Shih Tsuen-hua yesterday said that the most popular notes are NT$100, followed by NT$1,000 and NT$500 notes. Shih said each person can only exchange for a maximum of 100 NT$100 notes, the set limit.

Shih indicated that those designated financial institutions that can exchange older currency for new NT notes include Bank of Taiwan, Land Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Cooperative Bank, First Bank, Chang Hwa Bank and Taiwan Business Bank.

Those who live in rural or remote areas can approach offices of Chunghwa Post Co., Shih said.
