TAIPEI -- A magnitude 5.0 earthquake jolted Western Taiwan at 10:21 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at sea some 42.5 kilometers north of the outlying Penghu County's government office building at a depth of 24.4 km, bureau officials said.

The tremor's intensity, which measures the actual strength of shaking in a particular location, was highest in Dacheng Township in Changhua County, where it measured a 3 on Taiwan's 0-7 seismic intensity scale.
