TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The National Freeway Bureau (NFB) announced yesterday that Feb. 2 will be the peak travel day during the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays, with an estimate of up to 3 million vehicles.

According to the NFB, the first heavy wave of traffic heading south will emerge in the afternoon of Jan. 29, which is the day before Chinese New Year's Eve, and the estimated traffic flow will be between 1.6 million and 1.8 million vehicles.

On the day of Chinese New Year's Eve, which is Jan. 30, the NFB said there will be a second wave of traffic going southbound, and the estimated vehicles using freeways will be around 1.7 million and 1.9 million.

The peak travel time during Chinese New Year holidays, however, according to the NFB, will take place on Feb. 2 as most people will start heading back north or travel to tourist attractions with estimated traffic flow between 2.2 million and 2.4 million.
