FETC must compensate drivers: MOTC
By Joy Lee ,The China PostTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih (葉匡時) said yesterday that Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co. (FETC) is obligated under contract to compensate drivers whose freeway toll fee were falsely deducted if similar issues happen again.

Many legislators from the ruling and opposition parties yesterday questioned Yeh regarding the numerous complaints from drivers over the eTag electronic toll collection system falsely charging them following the implementation of the new freeway toll system on Dec. 30, 2013.
Yeh promised that people's rights will not be affected and the Transportation Ministry will demand that FETC compensate drivers who are affected if similar situations occur again.
“FETC has finished correcting the toll fee collecting system and the National Freeway Bureau (NFB) has activated an inspection system to prevent similar issues from happening again,” said Yeh.
“According to the contract, FETC not only has to pay back the money to drivers who are falsely charged by eTag but also compensate them with a reasonable amount,” Yeh said.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Lee Kun-tse (李昆澤) said that the Transportation Ministry did not respond properly to all the recent eTag issues, so he proposed that the new freeway toll system be suspended while the ministry conducts a complete inspection on the toll fee collecting system.
Yeh said that there are on average 1.5 million vehicles using the freeways since the launch of the new freeway toll system, and over 100 reports about irregular toll collecting situations have been reported since launch day, stating that it is normal for some mistakes to occur in the beginning.
“The main problem that caused these issues was that the original adjustment of the system's setup was not done properly, and FETC said that the problem has been fixed and these mistakes about falsely charging drivers will not happen again,” said Yeh.
