TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Cabinet confirmed yesterday that Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) Minister Kuan Chung-ming (管中閔) will be the next chairman of the National Development Council (NDC).
After the announcement, Kuan said that the NDC covers a wider variety of subjects compared to the Council for Economic Planning, including societal matters, economic needs and other aspects that will affect the entire nation. "I hope we can successfully push for Taiwan's development," said Kuan.
Kuan said he has already spoken with colleagues and will be holding a series of tightly-spaced meetings soon to discuss their goals and missions, hoping to glean thoughts on future policies and promote progress in Taiwan's infrastructure development.
The public speculated that Kuan would be targeted by Premier Jiang Yi-huah's (江宜樺) Cabinet reshuffle after he was criticized by many for a remark he made during a Legislature interpellation last December. Kuan responded to a resolution agreed upon by legislators to cut his year-end bonus by half, saying, "As a man, I do not care about year-end bonuses."
According to local media outlets, Jiang was displeased at Kuan's tone and words, and criticized the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) for its lack of efficiency in carrying out policies to retain talented individuals trained in Taiwan.
Others on Jiang's list supposedly include Executive Yuan Spokeswoman Cheng Li-wen (鄭麗文), Environmental Protection Agency Minister Steven Shen (沈世宏) and Interior Minister Lee Hung-yuan (李鴻源), who had allegedly been targeted due to his orders to scrap illegally-built hostels around Cingjing Farm. The reports also point out that the formal reshuffle is slated to happen before the Chinese New Year, which falls at the end of January.
Cheng refuted the reports, saying that she did not know where the news came from and did not know anything about similar matters.
