DPP in no hurry to nominate mayoral candidates: chairman

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) yesterday said the “Ko Wen-je phenomenon” is worthy of observation, noting that since the Kuomintang (KMT) has not yet determined its Taipei mayoral candidate, there is no hurry for the DPP to make such a decision at the moment.

Su's remark came after several pan-green groups held a joint press conference yesterday morning saying that Ko, a physician of National Taiwan University Hospital and Taipei mayoral election aspirant, does not necessarily need to join the DPP to be nominated by the party.

Given Ko's growing popularity over the past few months, the pan-green groups urged that the DPP should conduct a national poll centering on Ko and other DPP hopefuls.

The groups explained that as 30 percent of the population of Taipei comes from other cities across the country, they believe a national poll result can be a solid reference for the DPP's consideration.

The groups said, however, that they suggest the DPP wait until the KMT completes its Taipei mayoral nomination before it starts its own nomination process.

Former Academia Historica President Chang Yen-hsien (張炎憲), who attended the press conference, said DPP has a chance to win this year's Taipei mayoral election, and many people support Ko to run for the race.

Chang said it does not matter if the pan-green groups support Ko or not, what matters is that DPP members stop attacking each other and instead solve internal disputes.

In response, Su said he wishes talented people to join the DPP, so the party can unite all the pan-green groups to win over the KMT.

Su said Ko has talked with him twice over the matter, and he thinks the “Ko Wen-je phenomenon” — referring to Ko's increasing popularity among the party — is worthy of notice.

Su said he encourages the DPP members who wish to join the Taipei mayoral race to talk more about their blueprints for the city, and focus less on criticizing their opponents.
