Taiwan sees mercury hit lowest point of the year

TAIPEI--A cold spell sent temperatures plummeting around Taiwan yesterday, with many areas recording new lows for the year, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Temperatures in areas as far south as Tainan dropped below 10 degrees Celsius, with Chiayi County setting a low for low-altitude areas at 6.2 degrees, according to bureau data.

Danshui at the northern tip of the island recorded a low of 8.8 degrees, while Taichung in Central Taiwan saw the mercury plunging to 9.1 degrees, the bureau said.

Both Yushan and Hehuanshan, also known as Jade Mountain and Joy Mountain, saw new lows for 2013 at -9.5 and -9.1 degrees.

Taiwan could continue to experience low temperatures over the weekend, forecasters said, noting that the mercury could range from 9 to 15 degrees in Northern Taiwan, and 10 to 19 degrees in Southern Taiwan.

The chill is expected to ease off from Monday, with lows returning to above 12 degrees islandwide, the bureau said.
