Poor air quality forecast for weekend through Sunday

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- People with allergies or respiratory diseases should avoid outdoor activities Friday and over the weekend as a cold surge has introduced air pollutants islandwide, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) warned.

The cold air mass is stirring up dust and increasing the concentration of pollutants in the air, especially particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5), according to the EPA.

It said Southern Taiwan, in particular, can expect poor air quality during the next few days. Islandwide, the air quality is likely to return to normal next week, the EPA said.
