Taoyuan Airport greets 30 millionth passenger in '13

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, welcomed its 30 millionth traveler Tuesday, a record-high annual passenger volume for the country's main gateway.

The 30 millionth passenger, Chiang Kuang-an, arrived in Taiwan at 9:50 a.m. on a Dragonair flight from Hong Kong.

She was given a NT$50,000 (US$1,665) gift package that included return air tickets to Hong Kong, a watch and Taiwan souvenirs.

Chiang, a 32-year-old Taiwanese who grew up in the United States and works as a banker in Hong Kong, said she has always considered Taiwan her home.

The 30 million passengers handled by the airport in 2013 represent a 10-percent annual increase, according to Taoyuan International Airport Corporation, which operates the airport.

There was a 9-percent annual increase this year in the number of passengers taking off or landing, while the number of transit passengers grew by 12 percent, the company said.
