TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Two Taiwanese Navy vessels have arrived at Palau with relief goods and prefabricated houses to help in the Pacific island's post-typhoon reconstruction, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday.
The R.O.C. tank-landing ship Chung He (中和艦), loaded with 44 sets of prefabricated houses and relief supplies, arrived at Malakal Harbor, Palau Islands yesterday, MOFA said in a statement.
Together with the Chung He, the R.O.C. Navy Lafayette-class frigate Kunming (昆明艦), which escorted the transport vessel during the mission, also arrived at the harbor, it added.
The pair of ships was greeted by personnel at Taiwan's Embassy in Palau as well as Palau President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. upon their arrival. The two sides later held a ceremony to mark Taiwan's donations to the ally, it said.
Aside from donating prefabricated houses, MOFA said that Taiwan has donated US$100,000 to Palau as well as US$1.2 million in supplies to help with reconstruction work after the Western Pacific nation was hit by Typhoon Haiyan last month.
