CDC prepares PCV 13 vaccine for 1 & 2-yr-olds

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday announced that it will be releasing additional publicly funded Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines (PCV 13) for 1- and 2-year-old children next year.

According to CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩), Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) usually strikes children under 5 years old and elderly people over 65 years of age. Among infected children, those between 2-5 years old are more easily prone to the disease.

In order to lessen the possibility of children being infected with pneumococcus (肺炎鏈球菌), which results in complications such as pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis or even death, the CDC will be issuing PCV 13 vaccines for children born between 2009 to 2011 from low and semi-low income families, including 1- to 2-year-olds, beginning on Jan. 1, 2014.

There will be approximately 520,000 children that benefit from the new program, and the number of elderly to receive indirect protection will increase as they will not be subjected to as many germs as before, said Chou. “We hope to reduce at least 63 cases of IPD infections among 1- to 2-year-olds each year and save the lives of at least three children with these vaccinations,” Chou added.

The CDC will be notifying parents with children over 1 years old to head to hospitals or local health departments to receive the vaccinations next year.
