Mercury to drop as cold front blows from China

TAIPEI--Temperatures around Taiwan are expected to plunge beginning today due to a cold air mass from China, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

Daytime lows could fall across the country by up to five degrees Celsius to between 11 and 14 degrees, according to forecasters, with highs ranging between 14 and 17 degrees in northern Taiwan and 16 and 22 degrees in southern Taiwan.

As the cold and dry air moves in, the chances of rain will diminish, the bureau said.

Only occasional showers are expected in northern and eastern Taiwan, while cloudy to sunny weather is expected in other parts of the country until the weekend, when the cold spell should ease up.
