Penghu civil servants and teachers to get raises in '14: premier

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Starting from 2014, civil servants and teachers working in Penghu County will get a raise of between NT$1,200 and NT$4,120, Premier Jiang Yi-huah (江宜樺) announced yesterday in Penghu.

The premier led a delegation to Penghu yesterday, and Penghu Magistrate Wang Chien-fa (王乾發) requested that the Cabinet increase the monthly subsidies of civil servants and teachers.

Wang said given that the country is not in the best financial shape, Penghu cannot hope to win the same amount of subsidies as Kinmen and Matsu, but a raise is still a good start for Penghu's civil servants and teachers.

In response, Jiang said it is a reasonable request for Penghu to ask for the same amount of subsidies as in Kinmen and Matsu, noting that as infrastructure in Taiwan is well-established compare with that in Penghu, civil servants often have to contribute more and work harder to serve local residents.

The premier went on to say that over a year ago, the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration formed a team to consider the possibility of raising subsidies in Penghu, adding that he will request the team to speed up the process and calculate the exact amount of subsidies as soon as possible.

Frank Huang (黃富源), minister of the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, said subsidy adjustments will be based on public servants' transportation costs, economic conditions, and the degree of difficulty of their work.

Huang added that the administration will also review civil servant subsidy policies in other mountainous regions and islands, hoping to diminish differences in subsidies between regions.

Jiang said this announcement represents how much the government values the talented civil servants and teachers in Penghu, and also serves as an attempt to balance pay differences between Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. He said he hopes this will attract people to stay in Penghu and continue to serve Penghu residents.

According to the Penghu County Government, monthly subsidies for civil servants and teachers in Penghu currently stand at NT$4,640, NT$5,670, NT$7,730, and NT$9,790 for each of the four ranks of civil servants.
