North, east receive heavy rains ahead of wet week

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The North and East areas of Taiwan saw heavy rain yesterday due to the arrival of a weather front from southern China, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

As of 12:30 p.m., accumulated rainfall on Sunday reached 154.5 mm on Orchid Island, 141.5 mm in New Taipei's Sanhe District and 139 mm in New Taipei's Daping District, bureau figures show.

The rain could continue in North and East Taiwan on Dec. 16 and 17, under the influence of another front, while central and southern Taiwan could see showers on those two days, the bureau forecast.

From Dec. 18 to 21, temperatures could drop around Taiwan due to the arrival of a cold air mass from China and the rainy weather is likely to persist in areas around Taiwan over this period, the bureau said.
