1 mil. women need help with depression: survey

TAIPEI--Work, family life and economic pressure have left more than 1 million women across Taiwan with depression, according to the John Tung Foundation yesterday.

The foundation, which campaigns for mental and physical health, estimates that 12.4 percent of women show clear symptoms of depression, and as many as 1.19 million are in need of professional assistance, based on data collected in a survey of 2,850 women.

While research has shown that regular exercise over a period of six months makes a person less likely to suffer from depression, exercise was listed only number 8 on the list of what Taiwanese women do to relieve their stress, according to Yeh Ya-hsing, who heads the foundation's mental health section.
