The bureau could issue a sea warning between Friday evening and Saturday morning for the storm, which was centered some 940 kilometers east of Taiwan's southernmost tip on Thursday evening.
Whether the storm will rattle Taiwan will depend on how it is affected by a Pacific high-pressure system, the bureau said.
The 23rd storm of the 2013 Pacific typhoon season, Fitow was moving north-northwest at a speed of 10 kph, packing sustained winds of 108 kph with gusts of up to 136.8 kph.
Even if no sea warning is issued, Taiwan's weather over the weekend will be affected to some degree by the storm's proximity, the bureau cautioned.
