Downloads from such stores are expected to total 102 billion for 2013, up from 64 billion in 2012, Gartner, Inc. said in a recent note.
“We expect strong growth in downloads through 2014, but growth is forecast to slow down a bit in later years,” said Sandy Shen, a research director at Gartner.
Over time, users accumulate a portfolio of apps they like and stick to, so there will be moderate numbers of downloads in later years, she explained.
Free apps currently account for about 60 percent of the total number available in Apple Inc.'s iOS App Store and 80 percent in Google's Android app store Google Play, said Brian Blau, another Gartner research director.
The Android and iOS app stores combined are forecast to account for 90 percent of global downloads in 2017, he added.
