During his speech, Hwang Kwang-kuo, a professor at the Taipei-based National Taiwan University's Department of Psychology said that there is a trend among Taiwanese university professors to produce as many academic papers as possible, but according to Hwang, few of them devote just as much energy to their research.
He also urged Taiwanese academia to evaluate the quality of academic papers by the number of times of the paper is cited in other publications rather than emphasizing that papers have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals.
In Western academia, the influence of an academic is judged by the number of citations of a paper, Hwang said.
