The man, surnamed Wang, who works as a security guard in Tainan, told police on Tuesday that he met a woman online this February and the two began communicating through the Internet.
The 30-year-old said the woman told him that she is a military officer serving in the British military and is currently posted in Nigeria.
Identifying herself as “Sarah Smith,” the woman said she was madly in love with him and she would be voluntarily discharged from the military and fly to Taiwan to marry him, Wang said.
But the woman said she needed money to buy a plane ticket to Taiwan and Wang, over the past few months, sent her approximately NT$180,000 until he ran out of money.
The woman stopped communicating with him after Wang told her he had no more money to give her.
Wang later came to believe he was a victim of an elaborate dating scheme and, together with his girlfriend, he reported the case to the Tainan police on Tuesday.
