Freeways will be toll free every day from Sept. 18-22 between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. as the number of motorists hitting the nation's freeways per day could reach up to 2.4 million, according to the ministry.
The traffic peak is likely to fall on Sept. 19, the ministry said.
Traffic controls that allow only vehicles with three or more people inside to enter freeways will be imposed on certain parts of the No. 5 Freeway, it said.
Cars traveling north between Yilan County's Suao and Toucheng townships between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. during the last two days of the holiday period will be subject to the restriction, the ministry added.
No restrictions will be imposed on either the No. 1 or No. 3 freeways.
Drivers are advised to log onto http://1968.freeway.gov.tw/ to view a color-coded map indicating up-to-the-minute traffic conditions, officials said.
