In the third retrial of the case, Lai Kun-chieh was also ordered to pay NT$200,000 (US$6,689) in fines during his probation period. The case can be appealed.
Lai was arrested in May 2011 after a classmate tipped off authorities, the court said. He had contacted that classmate, an officer in the Taiwanese military, asking for secret information regarding technical specifications for missile systems.
Lai was absorbed by Chinese agents in February 2010 while he was working there, according to the court.
