War game to simulate China carrier attack: report

Taiwan's annual computer war games to be held next week are designed to test local armed forces' combat strategies and tactics in the face of a invasion led by China's first aircraft carrier, a paper said yesterday.

The report quoted military sources as saying that the war games, slated for July 8 to 12, will simulate a People's Liberation Army (PLA) invasion from Taiwan's East Coast in the year 2017.

The simulated PLA attack is expected to feature Liaoning (遼寧號), the first aircraft carrier commissioned into PLA and J-15 fighter jets, both the Chinese armed forces latest weapons, the report said.

The computerized exercises are part of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang 29 military exercise. The first part of the annual series of exercises, featuring a live fire drill, was conducted in April.

President Ma Ying-jeou will preside over the war games at Heng Shan Military Command Center (衡山指揮所) in Taipei, and the U.S. military will send a delegation to observe the drill, a custom that has been practiced for years, the report added.

During the drill, Taiwan's armed forces could deploy Hsiung Feng-III anti-ship cruise missiles. The Hsiung Feng-III has been hailed by local military experts as "an aircraft-carrier killer." The latest supersonic missile can cause greater damage by penetrating a vessel's exterior before exploding inside the cabin, according to local experts.

China's Liaoning aircraft carrier was commissioned into the PLA Navy on Sept. 25, 2012 after undergoing successful sea trials. Foreign experts have predicted that it is expected to be fully operational by 2017.

Military No Comment

Military spokesman Luo Shou-he (羅紹和) yesterday refused to comment on the report and the scenarios that will be tested during the war games.

The Han Kuang military drills — Taiwan's most important annual war games involving all military branches.

The exercise has been the largest military drill for local armed forces since 1984. It is held to test armed forces' ability to fight off an invasion by mainland Chinese forces.

One nuclear bomb on Taiwan, there will no longer this garbage story. Why talk about war with own Chinese compatriot. Why not Taiwan try to defend Chinese overseas right. The sooner Taiwan is wiped off the map, the better it is for the Chinese people. Look at Taiwan movies, they teach their people to murder their own people.

Easy there cowboy... Even the 50 cent party would tell you to tone that down. War games are practiced on both sides just in case. It's nothing to take too seriously.

Yeah, why write something that useless?

a) What Richard Yeo says is correct. Taiwan cannot even protect her own fisherman from being shot by the Philippine navy. Or at least after shot, sent in the Taiwan navy to teach them a lesson. But no .......What is that to talk about taking on China? Real laughable.

b) The less Taiwan talks the better. Go and see what you can do and help with some oversea Chinese, whether in East or South East Asia, Americas, Africa, Europe or even Middle East and South Asia.

c) Rather than becoming a real laughing stock to the world, the circus theatric action in Taiwanese parliament!!! Certainly that is NOT democracy!

Dear richard and joseph.
Its great that your parents let you use the computer to be good Chinese netizens. It's really amazing that at 12 years old you can spell so well.
I believe that by the time you both turn 20 China will finally accept gay marriage and you can spend your lives together being mighty netizens against the country (yes COUNTRY) known as Taiwan.
God bless everyone but not you two

My biggest humiliation in this world is seeing Chinese against Chinese; especially, the ones don't even respect their ancestors, don't know who they are and where they come from. I think the first Chinese emperor did the right thing and that is conquered them all and united the people. That way there is only 1 leader, 1 system, and once for all friendship and peace. Don't forget we have the same DNA! If our ancestors know about us against our own people, they cannot close their eyes from death.

It people like you that tout the true sentiment of PPRC and the rest of Asia surrounding the South China Sea. PPRC has never successfully defended against an enemy invasion on the mainland. Even in WWII the Chinese leaders were too busy deciding who would lead China after that Allies forces liberated them from China. We have a joke in the US: how many Chinese does it take to defend Beijing? The answer is no one knows, it has never been done.
