Canon launches tree-planting event for Earth Day, urges 'kyosei' concept

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- To celebrate this year's Earth Day, Canon Marketing (Taiwan) Co. yesterday invited hundreds of employees, cyclists, students and parents to join “Plant for the Planet: The Bill Tree Campaign,” the fourth tree-planting event organized by the HIMA Foundation (喜馬拉雅自然文明保護協會).

Canon Marketing also invited actress Janine Chang (張鈞甯) to plant saplings representing the hopes and dreams of the next generation.

The CEO of Canon Marketing, Atsushi Kamata (謙田篤), said that the company has always actively promoted the idea of “kyosei,” which means living and working together for the common good.

“With the principle of kyosei,” Atsushi said, “Canon has been focusing on environmental protection issues and promoting green activities all over Taiwan, such as inviting employees and the public to participate in the Earth Hour event to turn the lights off for an hour, as well as the tree-planting campaign.”

Chang, who was taking part in the tree-planting campaign for the second time, also called for more people to work toward creating a greener environment for the future.

“The fact that so many cyclists, students, parents and volunteers are participating in the Million Trees campaign shows that more and more people are aware of the need to protect the environment and other global environmental issues,” said Chang.

Yang Wen-ta (楊文德), president of the HIMA Foundation, said that the foundation picked New Taipei's Sanxia (三峽) and Yingge (鶯歌) districts to hold the tree-planting event in the hope of creating a “Sunny Forest Park” along the river bank, giving locals the chance to enjoy a natural and beautiful environment.

Canon has been organizing the annual tree-planting days with the Hima Foundation for three years. The events have attracted a total of more than 2,000 people since 2010, with many attendees purchasing potted plants to take home.

The “Plant for the Planet: The Bill Tree Campaign” was created by the United Nations Environment Program in 2007 with an aim to lead, encourage, inspire, and inform people and nations to better their lives without compromising the future generations to come.
