Calls for release of Chen gone mainstream: DPP

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The opposition party said that the call for Chen Shui-bian's medical parole has moved from the margins to the mainstream.

Top officers of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) inked a resolution urging the patient's release on medical parole yesterday.

"Chen's medical parole is not only an appeal of the DPP, and is not just about former President Chen Shui-bian," DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang told local media.

The patient's medical parole is a human rights issue that has drawn concern from many in Taiwan society and the international community. Parole for Chen has "already become a mainstream public opinion, having won majority approval and acceptance," Su continued.

DPP spokesman Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲) said a state-run hospital has validated the majority opinion.

"A professional report from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital has already recommended that former President Chen be allowed home care or a transfer to a hospital near home for further treatment — that's what would be beneficial to the patient," said Lin.

I believe Chen should be released on medical grounds to mainland China.
