WRA starts artificial rainmaking systems in Northern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Water Resources Agency (WRA) yesterday activated artificial rainmaking systems at Shimen (石門), Minde (明德) and Feitsui (翡翠) reservoirs as a cold front was forecast to pass Northern Taiwan over the weekend.

WRA spokesperson Tien Chiao-ling (田巧玲) said according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), the clouds were denser than expected so even though there was no obvious rainfall, the WRA still activated its artificial precipitation systems in an attempt to produce rainfall.

The Shimen Reservoir is currently at 46-percent capacity, the WRA said, adding that Taoyuan (桃園) and parts of New Taipei City have begun first-stage water rationing. Shimen Reservoir provides water to these regions.

First-stage water rationing means that between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. water will be provided at low-pressure, the WRA said.

The CWB said the nation yesterday received little rain.

According to weather forecasts, another cold front will pass Taiwan on March 27, lasting until March 29, the CWB said, adding that this front raises the possibility of rainfall for North and Northeastern Taiwan.

Southern Taiwan Water Shortage

The WRA said Southern Taiwan is still facing a water shortage and has received little rainfall. Greater Kaohsiung began first-stage water rationing on March 22.

Taiwan Water Corp. (Taiwater) said the Alishan (阿里山) and Fenchi Lake (奮起湖) regions received only 1 millimeter of rainfall over the past weekend. Such rainfall has had little to no effect on water levels for reservoirs in the area.

Taiwater said the Chiayi area has had little rainfall in the past three months and, based on current reservoir levels in the region, the Chiayi area has enough water to last until the end of May.
