Jiang said the Ministry of Justice has been studying the issue but has not made a decision because the majority of experts participating in the discussions are in favor of maintaining the status quo.
“This is an open question,” he told legislators during an interpellation session in the Legislative Yuan.
The issue triggered a heated debate in a Cabinet meeting the previous day, during which the Justice Ministry gave a briefing on the progress of the government's efforts to compile a national human rights report.
Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai reportedly complained in the meeting that despite Taiwan's rapid democratic development, it still maintains some laws that contradict its image as a free country, such as the one that still penalizes adultery.
