First-stage water rationing begins

The Water Resources Agency (WRA) said first-stage water rationing, which involves providing water at a low-pressure, will run from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

For apartments with a large water tower in the building, the policy will not have too much of an effect, the WRA said.

The WRA said people who live in apartments that do not have a water tower or usually require large amounts of water at night should conserve water in the daytime to provide a backup source.

After months of little to no rainfall, first-stage rationing for low-pressure water supplies began in Taoyuan County (桃園縣) and New Taipei's Linkou District (林口區) yesterday.

The WRA said the agency has been working with the Ministry of National Defense to complete an artificial precipitation method. This backup option is also known as rainmaking and aims to increase water levels.

The system involves aircraft sowing clouds with salt powder or dry ice to induce rainfall.

The WRA said the agency will work with the Central Weather Bureau to monitor weather forecasts. The rainmaking system will be activated if appropriate, the WRA said.

The agency said “conserving water” is not just a slogan, adding that they hope people will actually conserve water as part of responding to the dry weather.
