Lin Fang-yue also said in response to a question on whether Chen is afflicted with spinocerebellar ataxia, a progressive degenerative genetic disease with multiple types, that he and other experts at the hospital have not seen evidence of such a condition in Chen's imaging studies.

However, the jailed former president suffers from serious depression and chronic neurological disease, with symptoms of stammering and trembling hands, which require long-term care, he said.

The facilities at Taipei Veterans General Hospital are sufficient to provide adequate care for him, he added.

The hospital will release a complete medical report on Chen in a week or two, Lin said, adding a guarantee that it will be independent and free from political pressure or influence.
