US representatives visit economics officials: MOEA

U.S. Trade Representative Deputy Assistant Trade Representative Eric Altbach and Deputy Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Darci Vetter visited the MOEA in order to discuss patent laws, food safety, pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables, and issues concerning agricultural exports to the U.S.

The U.S. representatives also visited Vice Premier Mao Chi-kuo (毛治國), officials from Council of Agriculture, Department of Health, and the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), the MOEA said.

According to the MOEA, the U.S. representatives said the TIFA talks have opened a new communication channel for the two parties. The MOEA said the U.S. looks forward to seeing new progress in trade, business and the free trade zone area both for the U.S. and Taiwan.

Future Progress

The U.S. representatives hope the TIFA talks will take place in Washington in 2014.

　　Vice Minister for Economic Affairs Francis Liang (梁國新) said that Taiwan has remained one of the top 11 trade partners with the U.S. despite the difficulties of the global recession. Liang said he hopes to see the growth of business cooperation in the high-tech industries with the U.S. in order to benefit the two parties' industrial development.

Liang said Taiwan is the link to help the U.S. join in pan-Asia economic integration. The vice minister said that to promote regional trade cooperation is the government's primary target. The government will form a team focusing on international trade tactics to coordinate intergovernmental cooperation, said Liang.
