Regular license change rule to be abolished from July 1

The DGH estimated that around 3 million car and motorcycle drivers will benefit from the change.

Last year the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) revised another regulation, meaning people found driving without their license will only receive a warning instead of a ticket.

DGH Deputy Director-General Chao Hsin-hua (趙興華) said that drivers whose licenses expire before the new policy is officially announced will still have to renew their licenses.

“From the day this new policy is announced to July is the grace period,” Chao said, “and people do not have to change their driver's licenses in that period.”

According to the DGH, Taiwan's roughly 520,000 professional drivers, such as taxi, truck and bus drivers, will still have to change their licenses every six years.

DGH Director-General Wu Meng-fen (吳盟分) said that the government's income will decrease by NT$600 million after the new regulation takes effect in July.

“Even though the DGH is working on the paper-free license system,” Wu said, “people will still receive a paper driver's license version when they pass their first license test.”
