2013 Int'l Orchid Show offers 10 days of blooming beauty in TainanThe China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 2013 Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) opened in Tainan over the weekend, with Mayor William Ching-de Lai inviting people in Taiwan and abroad to visit the exhibition at Houbi Biotech Park.
March 11, 2013, 12:10 am TWN Lai said the theme of this year's show is “BLOOM — The Power of Orchids.” The 10-day show, running until March 18, provides opportunities for people to witness the unlimited possibilities of Taiwanese orchids and the metropolis of Tainan, which currently supplies one-sixth of the global market's orchids. There are seven themed exhibition halls, showcasing top-rated and award-winning orchids as well as newly developed species from orchid growers. In addition to the orchids, the exhibition also lets visitors appreciate local delicacies, creative designs and products made from orchids, said Lai. More than 260,000 people from Taiwan and overseas visited the 2012 Taiwan International Orchid Show, generating sales revenues amounting to NT$8.6 billion for Taiwan orchid growers. Officials at the Tainan City Government expect more than 3,000 orchid experts and flora traders to come from 35 foreign nations and areas this year. Su Mao-hsiang, an official from the Council of Agriculture, reported that export sales of Taiwanese flowers have been increasing every year, posting 10-percent growth to more than US$190 million in 2012. Overseas sales of Taiwanese orchids accounted for over US$165 million of total flora exports, proving the growing popularity of Taiwanese orchids, he said. He said there will be sustained growth in the years ahead as orchid growers in Taiwan continue winning top prizes at major international flower shows.
