Taiwan to play against Japan in WBC round 2The China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Chinese Taipei will face off with Japan in its first second-round game of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in Tokyo this Friday.
March 7, 2013, 12:00 am TWN Japan lost its last WBC first-round game to Cuba 6-3 yesterday in Tokyo. According to local report, Chien-Ming Wang, who led Taiwan to win the first-round match with Australia with six shutout innings, is the scheduled starter for the Friday match up with Japan. Chinese Taipei advanced to the WBC second round as the winner of Group B despite losing to archenemy South Korea 3-2 in their final first-round match. This is the first time Taiwan has advanced to the second round of the WBC, the highest-level international baseball competition. Taiwan won its tournament opener Saturday against Australia 4-1. It later topped the Dutch after coming back from an early 0-3 deficit, taking the important win with a final score of 8-3. Chinese Taipei is one of the four teams to advance to the second round of the WBC from Group A and B, along with Japan, Cuba, and the Netherlands.
