Southern Taiwan students take to feet to oppose 4th nuke plant

TAIPEI -- University students from Southern Taiwan launched a walking campaign yesterday to oppose a controversial nuclear plant project that is still under construction.

“I was born after the first, second and third nuclear plants had already been built. I am glad that I have the opportunity to come forward and stop the construction of the fourth plant,” said Huang Wei-lung at a press conference held outside the Third Nuclear Power Plant in Pingtung County.

Huang was one of six students who initiated the campaign to walk from the southern tip of Taiwan to Kaohsiung, 85 kilometers away, in time to take part in an anti-nuclear rally in the city on March 9.

The students, from National Sun Yat-sen University and National University of Kaohsiung, are getting help in their campaign from a volunteer with Citizen of the Earth Taiwan, an environmental group that is part of a Southern Taiwan anti-nuclear action alliance.

The students explained that they launched the campaign because the lives and property of Taiwan's people are threatened by nuclear power and the cost of building the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant has risen far above its originally projected costs.

Nearly 100 people from several anti-nuclear groups and local residents of Hengchun joined the students on the five-day march.

To call attention to the potential dangers of nuclear power, civil groups from across the island will organize rallies in Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung and Taitung on March 9, two days ahead of the second anniversary of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear disaster in Japan.

They will advocate blocking additional funding for construction of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant, removing radioactive waste from Taiwan's outlying Orchid Island, and immediately closing Taiwan's three operating nuclear power plants.

Huang Wei-lung says “I was born after the first, second and third nuclear plants had already been built. I am glad that I have the opportunity to come forward and stop the construction of the fourth plant.”

Yes Huang, we live in a democratic country. That is why the referendum should be held to hear the voice of the majority. Not for any political party to use this issue as PERPSONAL POLITICAL ambition for self purposes.

I was born before the first, second and third nuclear plants were built. What I felt the benefits of having nuclear energy is difficult to explain to you. Only thing I can convince you is that not only we but many other countries needed the nuclear energy.

Go back to school and focus your study, don't be used by DPP politicians. They just pretend to love you.
March 6, 2013    ludahai_twn@
I would like to see my children enjoy the benefits of clean, safe energy like solar, wind, tidal and geothermal. Nuclear is not viable on an island-country like Taiwan.

As for Carltanong, he doesn't care for the voices of the people. Students have a right to have a voice and just because it doesn't agree with yours it doesn't mean you have a right to vilify it, like you always do.

I am a teacher at a southern Taiwan university. I am not pro-DPP (not heavy KMT either). But I do respect the opinion of my students. They are the future of Taiwan now. Not my generation, nor the autocratic and dogmatic Carltanong generation. Let young people stand up for what they believe or don't believe in! Long live Taiwan's Free Opinion of Speech!
March 7, 2013    howdy@
The first comment suggests that students "are used by DPP" concerning nuclear power. So those KMT politicians (including lawmakers) who oppose Longmen power station are also "used by DPP"? Or they are less intelligent than Carltanong?

My statement to the students by saying "Go back to school and focus your study, don't be used by DPP politicians. They just pretend to love you". That means the parent of the students wanted them to study first and to acquire knowledge so that they will be successful in their own future.

Whether the students agree with me or not, my intention is to convey my message to the students that their parents love them more than the DPP. Besides the students can go to votes if they are eligible voters.

As for you, it's your own decision to vote YES or NO. And I don't believe you care about the students’ right to "study first and vote later" when time comes. Just like you insulted the Wu's parents without advising them the marathon guideline by "insulting them first before opening your marathon guideline.

The first commentator may want to limit himself to what he infamously knows best: insult all DPP supporters and all Japanese.
March 12, 2013    albert11010@
@cartanong, you are not the students' parents, how do you know so well that their parents just want the students to study hard but not to care about our future safety.
March 13, 2013    carltanong@
albert11010@
Yes. I'm not the student's parents. My point is that all the parents want their son and daughter to study hard to have a brighter future.
Didn't your parent want your grading card to-
_Monitor your grading academic grade if it is below or above the acceptable minimum?
_Monitoring your grading card if you are skipping classes?
_Monitoring your character and behavior noted in your grading card?
_Monitoring and keep asking if you attended or skipping classes?
_Monitoring your where about for your own safety?

And sure the NUKE ENERGY are everybody concern, That is what I say RISK and BENEFIT.

Now I just want to ask u three question and very simple.
_Do u believe the developed and developing country will shut down their NUKE?
_Do u believe that Saudi Arabia are going to build more than 20's NUKE. Remember that SA have the largest reserved of oil and natural gas. And why SA still needed the NUKE? Even others Gulf states will build NUKE.
_Do u believe even Indonesia, Vietnam and other's will build NUKE for energy purposes?

Get REAL my friend.

Dear Teacher Jenny
I am a young generation like your students. Born in 1977. Taipei. I graduated from a Catholic university here PH. I and my classmates were advice by our professor that even all of us have the right of free opinion and speech. She will be glad to hear all of our opinion anytime but should be after class. Not in the street but inside our campus.
She said......
_You are my students and I am your guardian
_Respect my advice as I respect all your rights.
_And all of you will received handsomely what you learned here after leaving the gate of your Alma Mater.
_And DO's what is RIGHT, And don't DO's what is wrong.
_Think POSITIVE with NEGATIVE side when all of you begin your new lease of life and journey in our society.
_Then made your own final decision. Not being influence from others element.

This carltanong,

Stop posting rude and nonsense cr@p. Write it in your own diary somewhere and not here. You are just being inflammatory.

Read carefully my......
_March 5, 2013 and March 7, 2013 posts. Did u notice any word that I posted is rude and nonsense or am being a inflammatory or a cr@p person?

Please read carefully Teacher Jenny arguments on March 6, 2013
"I am a teacher at a southern Taiwan university......nor the autocratic and dogmatic Carltanong generation........"
Teacher Jenny should not use that rough word " Carltanong generation" in her sentence. As a Teacher, she should understand her status as an educator......

Read my response to Teacher Jenny on March 13, 2013. Am I cr@p posting rude and nonsense that inflame her or her students or giving a friendly advice for her and her students?

As for that teacher of 7th grader in literature in the 2nd floor. Are u willing to accept his insult against the innocent Wu's parents as NUTS??? I think he is so delighted that you are ignoramus did not even call him dogmatic or cr@p'.

Carltanong,

In response to your remark on 15 March:

Just wondering: what is this person's Carltang response to gentledoesit@?

"Did u notice any word that I posted is rude and nonsense or am being a inflammatory or a cr@p person?"

If that man, CARLTANONG, can not see his own bad manners and insolent undertones, my advice --- let him be what he wants to be.

To one commentator above (carltanong, 15 March) who claims not to post rudeness and nonsense: Stalin, Zhedong, Lenin while acting like dictators, could sound very cunningly also.

@ the entity called CARLTANONG: 3 overly simple answers to your overly simple questions:

"Do u believe that Saudi Arabia are going to build more than 20's NUKE. Remember that SA have the largest reserved of oil and natural gas. And why SA still needed the NUKE? Even others Gulf states will build NUKE."

Saudi Arabia's main intent for it "civilian" nuclear energy is to advance their nuclear (attack) program. Read related news (2003-2011) and you will (maybe?) see so yourself.

"Do u believe the developed and developing country will shut down their NUKE?"

Yes. Like for many things European, Germany is taking the lead, already followed by the Netherlands and Belgium. And Taiwan can hardly be called a "developing" country any longer...

"Do u believe even Indonesia, Vietnam and other's will build NUKE for energy purposes?"

Are you saying Taiwan should open Nuke 4 since it can then also use it for non-civilian purposes - and risk a war with China?

DPP 'no matter what happens' attack dogs against 1 reasonable KMT guardian.. LOSERS....

Carl, your only motivation is against DPP. You don't care about Taiwan’s people, people’s happiness, only enemy of many Taiwan green people. You are a bad actor, lonely man or woman.

Yes, the same dogs who will stand up for their country in times of need - while other dogs will then retreat with tails between their legs.

"1 reasonable KMT guardian"??

Pardon me, richchen, but that person (whoever he is or may want to express) is most probably NOT "reasonable". I support a Free and Blue Taiwan, but I don't think we should support bullies, blue or green.

Totally agree... blues and greens need to work together in order to improve Taiwan. I am green, but I am certainly not against working with blues for common goals.
