Presidential Office mulls honoring director Ang Lee

Presidential Office spokeswoman Garfie Li said Wednesday that the decoration would be for his great contributions to filmmaking and for bringing honor to Taiwan.

The Presidential Office could confer upon Lee the Order of Brilliant Star with Special Grand Cordon, the highest of the nine ranks of the civilian order of Brilliant Star, Li said.

The Order of Brilliant Star is awarded to civil servants, members of the public and foreigners who have made great contributions to the country or society.

In addition to winning Lee the best director award at this year's Academy Awards, “Life of Pi” — most of which was shot in Taiwan — also won Oscars for best original score, best cinematography and best visual effects.

Lee was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon, which is one rank lower, in 2006 after winning his first best director Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain.”
